Neurology
Neurology is the study of the nervous system and its medical conditions. It includes disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves throughout the body. Neurological problems can be associated with a great variety of symptoms. Examples include headaches, dizziness, memory problems, numbness, and muscle weakness, among many others. Common conditions evaluated and treated in a neurological practice include migraine, vertigo, balance disorders, seizure disorders, peripheral neuropathy, and multiple sclerosis. A neurologist performs a neurological examination to help diagnose a problem, and plan further evaluation and treatment. Sometimes special tests are recommended, such as CAT scans or MRI scans of the brain or spine.
Sleep Medicine
Patients with sleep disorders may experience insomnia, restless sleep, non-restorative sleep, snoring, and excessive daytime sleepiness. Common conditions include obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy. A sleep medicine specialist may recommend special tests to help diagnose and treat the underlying sleep disorder, such as home sleep tests, or overnight polysomnography in a special clinic. Dr. Stanton is the medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts.
Pain Medicine
Pain is a common complaint, and a pain specialist has special training to diagnose painful symptoms. Common conditions treated include migraine and other headaches, neck and back pains, and sciatica. A pain specialist helps a patient to understand treatment options, which might include physical therapy or medications. Dr. Stanton also provides acupuncture as a treatment option (see "Medical Acupuncture"). Dr. Stanton does not carry out interventional therapies such as cortisone injections, but may refer certain patients to colleagues who can provide such treatments, or who require neurosurgical or orthopedic consultation.
Clinical Neurophysiology
This includes certain tests such as electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG). EEGs are useful in various conditions that might involve the brain, such as seizure problems. EMG commonly is helpful in the diagnosis of conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, and sciatica.
